I wish I had gotten more how-to advice for raising children while in Africa. I have noticed all over the continent that children respect their elders and are always eager to help. And no matter the task, they perform it with a huge, gleaming smile, just like the ones pictured here. These kids were helping pull in the fishing boats from the sea in Assinie Mafia, Côte d’Ivoire. If I had to guess, perhaps one way to get your kids to enjoy doing work is to do the work yourself with joy, to “whistle while you work.” I’m going to try that. I will let you know how it goes! (in 7 or so years when my kids are old enough to work that is)
