This is one of my favorite photos from my time in Madagascar. We chartered a sailboat for four days and explored the Mozambique Channel off the coast of Nosy Be. We anchored near these two small islands that were connected by a land bridge when the tide was low. On one island was a small village selling handmade arts and crafts, on the other a small hotel. This sailing excursion was a last minute decision so we weren’t fully prepared. One thing we forgot was sunscreen. We searched both the islands for it as our skin baked in the sun, and each time we asked, the people there looked at us like we were crazy, saying only “No” but thinking, “We are Africans. We don’t wear sunscreen silly white person.” Thankfully I did manage to find a hat.
